Speicherstadt Interesting Facts, Hamburg, Germany 4k UHD The Speicherstadt, a Hamburg landmark, is one of the main attractions in the great harbour tour. The world's largest integrated complex of warehouses was built in 1883, five years before Hamburg received its free port. Since 1991, the unique district has been given historic monument protection. The warehouses are built on oak piles and the district is crossed by what are known as fleets - canals that are flooded depending on the tides and can then also be travelled by ship. You can travel the narrow canals in small barges to savour the architectural details if the tide is right. A canal tour with a historic barge like this is an unforgettable experience. Hamburg is a pretty cool place - I love the mix between old and new everywhere you go and with all the construction going on it's going to be great to visit in a few years again and see how much the city has changed. I would imagine that Hamburg is busier with tourists during the summer but even on a cold and windy February day I still saw quite a few people out and about taking photos. Many people opt for Munich, Berlin, or some of the smaller German cities but I still think Hamburg is worth visiting and checking out! It is the country's biggest port and the second-busiest in Europe, despite being located astride the River Elbe, some 100 kilometres from the North Sea. It is also Germany's second largest city with a population of over 1.8 million and the Greater Hamburg Metropolitan Region has a population of over four million. Hamburg is proud of its status as a "Free and Hanseatic City" and thus shares the same status as a province, making up one of Germany's 16 federal-states or Bundesländer. Top tip: Most hotel offers you a travel card that allows you to travel on bus, tram and metro for free including the famous ferry 63 ride. Townhall: Hamburg's impressive city hall ("Rathaus") was built in 1897 out of sandstone in Neo-Renaissance style, including a 112 m tower. Inside there are several magnificent halls used for representative purposes and sittings of government and parliament. Harbour: Landungsbrücken ("landing bridges"), the most touristy part of Hamburg's harbour, close to the metro station with the same name. Piers connected with several bridges swim on the water adapting to the tide. There tourism boats land and you will find tourist shops, restaurants, and snack bars. The sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers can be visited. Reeperbahn Red Light District: Another Hamburg landmark is the Reeperbahn in Sankt Pauli. It's probably one of the most famous red-light districts in the world. From vaudeville to prostitutes, from bars to sex-shops, you can find an assortment of attractions. Plus, it is frequently visited by a lot of travelers to go shopping for a huge variety of sex-related articles and toys. This is probably one of very few places worldwide where all shopkeepers give you serious and open advice on all kinds of sex-related articles. Planten un Blomen is a park in the city with an emphasis on flower displays. Subway station Dammtor. St. Michaeliskirche Protestant baroque church, the building as it is known today was built in 1786.

Most tours depart from the landing stages in St. Pauli. Groups can even charter a whole barge. At nightfall, the Speicherstadt is enveloped in an aura of mystery. At that time of day, the red brick buildings and steel bridges are artfully illuminated by 800 spotlights. Enjoy the fairytale atmosphere of illuminated façades, reflections in the water and the spicy aromas of goods from around the world 365 days a year... The "Lichtkunst Speicherstadt" project was realised by the Verein Licht-Kunst-Speicherstadt e.V. Its 50 members provide the lighting, power supply and carry out maintenance and repair. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Skyride to Paradise Point, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I63NPWAS72g -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

You want to know what Hamburg is all about? Just give us a minute! We spent three days in Germanys vibrant harbour city and even met a local legend. Here are our highlights. In 60 seconds. ///// 60seconds.travel. We travel the world. In 60 seconds.///// Check out our website: http://60seconds.travel and follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/60seconds.travel Here are our recommendations in order of appearance: 00:08 The Old Elbe Tunnel Once a technical sensation, the tunnel from 1911 connects the Landungsbrücken with Steinwerder. 00:10 Alster Stand Up Paddling The Alster is a tributary of the Elbe and passes through beautiful surroundings. Stand Up Paddling and Yoga is very popular. We recommend the Supper Club. www.supperclub.de 00:13 The weather The weather of Hamburg has a very bad reputation. But actually it rains less than you might think. 00:15 Miniatur Wunderland (Kehrwieder 2-4) It's the world's largest model railway. It’s amazing and somehow very German (in the best sense). www.miniatur-wunderland.com 00:17 Harbour Tour No visit to Hamburg is complete without a harbour cruise to see the impressive loading docks from up close. We went with www.barkassen-meyer.de. 00:20 Speicherstadt The Old Warehouse District is the largest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings stand on oak logs. 00:22 Kaffeemuseum Burg (St. Annenufer 2) This museum about the history and making of coffee offers interesting tours that include a yummy coffee tasting. www.kaffeemuseum-burg.de/museum/ 00:24 Chocoversum (Meßberg 2) If you are more into chocolate – than this is your place to be! Check out the delicious tours here: www.chocoversum.de 00:26 Fish Market Altona (Große Elbstraße 9) This must be the place where the word „market crier“ has been invented. A really fun place to start the day. Every sunday from 6AM-9:30AM. 00:30 Sightseeing Tour The best way to get an overview of the city is to hop on one of the red double-deckers. www.die-roten-doppeldecker.de 00:32 Dockland This futuristic office building might not be the prettiest but it certainly offers a stunning view over the harbour from its top. 00:34 St. Michael’s Church The „Michel“, as the locals call the tower of their beloved church, is one of the best viewpoints above the city. It’s 5 Euros to get up there. 00:36 Clouds Heaven’s Bar (Reeperbahn 1) Right on top of the stunning Dancing Towers, this fancy rooftop bar offers great drinks and an exklusive view over the city. www.clouds-hamburg.de 00:38 Planten un Blomen Park Its name is Low German and means „plants and flowers“. Pretty accurate. And a really pretty park. 00:39 Hamburg City Hall One of the many beautiful giant renaissance buildings in Hamburg and home to its mayor. 00:41 Trostbrücke One of the 2500 bridges in Hamburg. Yes, the city has more bridges than venice! 00:42 Bairro Alto (Schulterblatt 58a) Hamburgs Portuguese quarter hosts lots of delicious restaurants. Our pick, Bairro Alto, is actually situated in another part of town. www.bairro-alto.de 00:43 Thai Oase (Große Freiheit 38) You are into Karaoke? Then this is your place to be! As small as it is iconic. 00:44 Beatles Tour Stefanie Hempel offers a special Kiez-Tour – as the world career of the Beatles actually started – in Hamburg! www.hempels-musictour.de 00:46 Zum Schellfischposten A traditional harbour pub should always be on your itinerary in Hamburg. This one is the oldest of the city. 00:48 Elbphilharmonie Hamburgs latest landmark opened in 2016. Hamburgers gave it a nickname: Elphie. Its architecture is dizzying! www.elbphilharmonie.de 00:49 Elbchaussee, Strandperle There’s no street in Germany with more millionaires than the Elbchaussee reaching from Ottensen to Blankenese. At Övelgönne it’s close to a very hip sandy beach. At its centre the legendary restaurant and bar Strandperle. www.strandperle-hamburg.de 00:53 Gängeviertel A lively cultural and arts center with lots of galeries and exciting works of art in every corner and on every wall. 00:54 Rote Flora The Rote Flora stands for the lively alternative scene but also became infamous as the major hotspot of the G20 riots. 00:55 Frau Hedis Tanzkaffee (Bei den Landungsbrücken 10) A very fun way to start partying is to hop on Frau Hedis little boat and dance to all sorts of music while you are cruising through the harbour. http://frauhedi.de 00:57 Schanzenviertel The alternative party and bar center of Hamburg. Our favourite part of town to go out. The locals like to meet up on the street corners for the first few drinks before heading to the clubs, calling it „cornern“. 00:59 Das Verlies, Reeperbahn The infamous Club de Sade, the oldest SM club in Europe, offers tourist tours in the early evenings under the name „Das Verlies“ ( http://das-verlies.com ). A very special tour about the dark side of the world famous party district Reeperbahn. Thanks a lot to Hamburg Tourismus GmbH for the logistic support.

From the Cologne Cathedral to Oktoberfest in Munich here are 19 Popular Tourists Attractions In Germany, you better write them down! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. Berlin Wall The concrete wall separated East and West Berlin from August 1961 to November 1989. It cut through the city center of Berlin and it was here that John F. Kennedy delivered his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. Because of its controversy, many celebrities have performed on the Western side of the wall including David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, and David Hasselhoff. Today, the Berlin Wall stands as a monument to Germany’s history and as a symbol of German unity. If you visit it today, you’ll see that the western face of the wall has been covered entirely in graffiti done by artists from all over the world. During the 1980s, the eastern side of the wall was chillingly blank, because people of East Berlin were not allowed to approach the barrier. 6. Cologne Cathedral This incredible example of Gothic architecture was declared a world heritage site in the mid-90s. The cathedral was built in 1248 and wasn’t fully completed until the late 1800s. From anywhere in this historic city, you can view the soaring spires of the cathedral which measure nearly 520-feet tall. The inside nave is lit by sunlight through colorfully stained glass windows dating to 1260 and is home to relics from Saint Felix and Saint Gregory. Inside the cathedral’s South Tower is the world’s largest free-swinging church bell, which weighs over 52,000 pounds. Of course, to see it and the amazing views of the Rhine river, you’ll have to climb 533 steps to ascend 300 feet. 5. Europa-Park If history and sight-seeing aren’t really your thing, you can still enjoy the largest theme park in Germany. In fact, this theme park is one of the most popular in all of Europe, second only to Disneyland Paris. Here, you can ride 13 incredible rollercoasters or, if you come in early spring, you can enjoy the Euro Dance Festival. The park covers 950,000 square meters and is sectioned into different themed areas including England, Greece, and France. Other attractions are the King Arthur area and a fairytale themed enchanted forest taking inspiration from the Grimm Brothers. 4. Lindau In the middle of the crystal clear blue water of Lake Constance is this must-see town which has been around since the year 882. Lindau is the most popular tourist destination in southern Germany, mainly because of its maintained historical districts and attractions. Here, you can visit the famed Thieve’s Tower, which once served as a prison, but today offers the most incredible views of the lake and city, or 100-foot tall lighthouse built in 1850. Lindau is a favorite among tourists and residents because it is a lush, green island with gardens and old German charm. 3. Die Badende (The Bather) This magnificent sculpture was once on display in Hamburg’s Alster Lake. The blonde woman is almost entirely submerged, with just her knees and head breaking the surface. She rose 13-feet from the water and was nearly 100-feet in length. Amazingly, the Bather was made out of styrofoam and was actually a gigantic advertisement for a British soap company. She could be viewed from the shore of the lake or, if you rented a paddle-boat, you could get up close and personal. During her short-lived fame, she caused a lot of controversy in Hamburg. Unfortunately, she was only around for ten days, but Germany is also home to many other incredible works of art. 2. Oktoberfest in Munich Every year, beginning in late September, Munich is home to the largest German folk festival: Oktoberfest. The festival lasts for 16 to 18 days and attracts around 6 million people each year. Oktoberfest has been held in Bavaria since the the Middle Ages and has only grown in importance and popularity since. Oktoberfest is a time to celebrate traditional Bavarian culture including agriculture, music, food, and, of course, beer. In fact, only beer that meets certain requirements and is brewed within Munich can be served at this Oktoberfest. If you’re looking to experience one of the largest cultural festivals in the world, Oktoberfest in Munich is the place to be. 1. Neuschwanstein (noy-shvan-shtein) Castle Located in Bavaria, Germany is this palace commissioned by Ludwig II in1869. As a prince, he enjoyed a love of fantasy, books, poetry, and music. Neuschwanstein Castle was an escape from reality and it shows in the fantastical architecture and decoration of the palace. The dramatic fairytale castle is set against a jaw-dropping landscape of mountains and trees, adding to its magnificence. Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for the Cinderella Castle in Walt Disney’s theme parks and is visited by 1.4 million people each year.

I wasn't in the city for long but one day in Hamburg is definitely enough time to walk around, explore some of the main sights, and get a feel for the city! You can check out the following article on my blog for a better look at some of the best things to do in Hamburg: www.stefanrtw.com/things-to-do-in-hamburg/ Keep up with me online!
